GFATM Project on HIV/ AIDS Prevention among Young People in Bangladesh

Target Population: Young people of 15 to 24 years of age

Geographical location/area coverage: Seven districts (Dhaka, Faridpur, Mymensing, Gazipur, Narayangonj, Madaripur &Tangail) of Dhaka division, one district (Sylhet) of Sylhet division, two districts (Barisal & Patuakhali) of Barisal division, three districts (Khulna, Jessore & Satkhira) district of Khulna division, three districts (Chittagong, Comilla & Cox's Bazar) of Chittagong divisions and three districts (Rajshahi, Chapainababgonj & Dinajpur) of Rajshahi division of Bangladesh.

Goal: To prevent HIV infection among young people and ultimately avert a generalized epidemic in Bangladesh

Objectives: The objective of this package is prevention of HIV/AIDS among young people through life skills education by youth organizations, movements and clubs; adapt WHO model for implementing youth friendly health services in the country context; increase the accessibility of condom by the youth when they need one following social marketing strategy; and printing & distribution of briefing materials among the young people and gatekeepers

Major Strategy/Approach: Provision of HIV/AIDS Orientation, training and services to adolescents via Life skills Education (LSE), initiate & establish and Youth Friendly Health services (YFHS) and Accessing Condom for Youth (ACY) to prevent HIV/AIDS.

Major Activities:
A. Common Activities for all components:
o Preparation of strategy/concept paper/implementation guideline & make necessary revisions based on the study/pilot findings for LSE, YFHS & ACY.
o Curriculum & Material development, printing & distribution for LSE & YFHS
o Development of Master trainers for LSE & ACY
o Capacity development of project staff through training & exposure visit
o National, divisional & district level meetings for sensitization, advocacy, consensus building, planning and result dissemination workshops
o Monitoring & evaluation of the activities of all components

B. Component-wise specific activities
1. Life Skills Education (LSE):
o Mapping and selection of youth organizations, clubs & movements.
o Develop peer educators through Master trainers
o Conduct training program for the young people in the community through selected youth organizations,
2. Youth Friendly Health Services (YFHS):
o Mapping and selection of Health Service Delivery Points (HSDPs) from GoB, NGO and Private
o Conduct Health Facility Assessment (HFA) in selected HSDPs using standard tools
o Implement training program for the Health Service Providers (HSPs) from 100 HSDPs at divisional/district and upazila level
o Arrange refurbishment in selected facilities based on assessment findings
3. Accessing Condom for Young (ACY):
o Organize high level policy level meeting to explore and allocate supply of condom assigned for infection prevention or any other source to GOB, NGO and Private sector health facilities at YFHS site integrating with existing supply system
o Implement revised strategy for young access to condom at selected site
o Update/develop information on condom and incorporate into the life skills curriculum and skills developed through peer approach at LSE implementing sites
o Monitor the supply of condom for young people at YFHS implementation sites
